Ms. Phyllis Mable
Phyllis Mable has served in the Higher Education field for more than 45 years. Phyllis earned degrees at Cornell and Indiana universities. She then worked at the University of Florida for 12 years and as Dean of Student Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University for 11 years. Phyllis came to Longwood College in 1982, and served as the Vice President of Student Affairs before retiring in Spring 2001.
As an accomplished author Phyllis has co-edited numerous books including Understanding Today’s Students and Realizing the Educational Potential of Residence Halls. Realizing the Educational Potential of Residence Halls explains how residence halls can promote student learning and personal development by becoming more integral to the overall college experience.
Phyllis Mable’s list of awards and affiliations is astounding. She has served as president of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) and won the ACPA Outstanding Professional Service Award. In 1981, ACPA awarded Phyllis the Annuit Coeptis Award which is given to a senior professional. This award values wide-ranging discussion and exchange about professional issues within the field of higher education.
Phyllis helped to found the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS) in 1979. She continued her affiliation by serving as President from 1989-2001. Phyllis currently serves as the Executive Director of CAS based out of Washington, D.C.
Phyllis plans to speak to the conference attendees about student development, strategic planning, and the importance of assessment strategies.

Dr. Chris Flynn
Christopher Flynn, Ph.D. is Director of the Cook Counseling Center at Virginia Tech. A licensed clinical psychologist, he has spent most of his professional career in college mental health having previously held positions at Boston College and Loyola University New Orleans.
Dr. Flynn received his doctorate from the University of Miami, his master’s degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and his bachelor’s degree from Clark University.
